Bernardine Evaristo has been awarded the Women's prize outstanding contribution award, celebrating her significant influence on literature and noteworthy contributions to elevating diverse voices. This $100,000 prize comes as recognition of her entire body of work, including her acclaimed novels Girl, Woman, Other and Mr Loverman. Beyond her writing, Evaristo's commitment to supporting female writers and underrepresented voices is evident through her initiatives, including the RSL Scriptorium awards. Her recent election as president of the Royal Society of Literature marks another significant milestone, making her the first writer of color in that role.
I am completely overwhelmed and overjoyed to receive this unique award... I have witnessed with great admiration and respect how the Women's prize for fiction has so bravely... championed and developed women's writing.
This substantial sum is an unexpected blessing in my life and it seems fitting that I spend this money supporting other women writers.
The prize is designed to reflect the founding principles of the Women's prize for fiction, to celebrate and amplify women's voices and shine a spotlight on exceptional, original books.
Throughout her career, Evaristo has launched several successful writing schemes designed to support female writers and under-represented writers of colour, most recently launching the RSL Scriptorium awards.
