A whale of a summer project: Kids and teens build colossal climbing structure at Berkeley's Adventure Playground
Briefly

A 24-foot whale climbing structure has been built at Berkeley Marina's Adventure Playground by 85 local students from Girls Garage, a nonprofit teaching design to girls and gender-expansive youth. The structure includes features for play such as a rib cage, baleen-inspired mouth, tail, and fin. In collaboration with Girls in Engineering, handholds were designed and 3D-printed. Students acquired hands-on skills like measuring and using tools during a month-long summer camp, highlighting the program’s focus on empowerment and safety in construction activities.
"The whale, greeting visitors at the playground's entrance, includes a rib cage kids can crawl through, a baleen-inspired mouth, a tail and a fin."
"During the program, students learned hands-on skills like measuring, cutting, drilling and using power tools safely many for the first time."
