'You can't avoid the political climate' - Fishlock on EuroGames 'honour'
"It's something that is important to me, that I resonate with deeply. I see it as an honour, and it is important for visibility. You can't avoid the political climate right now. It is super important to be involved in these kinds of things; I don't want to say change the narrative, but to more support something that means a lot to me."
"I've been out for many years now, and with deciding to be out while I play, I choose to use my platform within our community. It feels right to be part of this."
Jess Fishlock, Wales' record international footballer with 166 caps and 48 goals, accepted an ambassadorial role for the 2027 EuroGames in Cardiff. The event will be the first UK-hosted EuroGames, Europe's largest annual LGBTQ+ multi-sports competition, expecting up to 10,000 participants across city venues including Llanrumney where Fishlock grew up. She accepted the position due to personal connection as an out gay Welsh athlete and recognition of the current political climate affecting LGBTQ+ people. Fishlock emphasizes the importance of visibility and using her platform to support the community. The EuroGames, established in 1992, welcome all participants regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, skill level, or age, promoting integration and countering discrimination in sport.
