World Boxing has announced the implementation of mandatory gender tests for athletes in all competitions, aiming to ensure safety and provide equitable conditions for male and female fighters. This decision follows a controversy involving Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, whose opponent at the Paris Olympics claimed she wasn't a woman due to her powerful punches. Khelif will be required to undergo testing before participating in future events, including the upcoming Eindhoven Box Cup, as all athletes over 18 must provide certification of their gender through a genetic test.
World Boxing has stated that the introduction of mandatory gender tests is aimed at ensuring safety and delivering a competitive level playing field for all athletes.
The decision comes after controversy following Imane Khelif's Olympic performance, where unfounded gender claims affected competition dynamics during the event.
