World Athletics has instituted mandatory sex testing for competitors in female categories, aimed at verifying if athletes have undergone male puberty or possess testosterone advantages. This initiative, described by president Lord Sebastian Coe as a means to ensure the integrity of women's sports, will involve non-invasive testing methods such as cheek swabs. This policy emerges amidst growing concerns about trans athlete participation, especially in context of the upcoming 2028 LA Olympics, and reflects ongoing discussions on the inclusion vs exclusion of trans competitors.
"This we feel is a really important way of providing confidence and maintaining that absolute focus on the integrity of competition," he said.
"Neither of these are invasive," he said. "They are necessary and they will be done to absolute medical standards."
