"If you look at the Paris Olympics and the athletes that emerged in their sports, you will see more women than men. When I look at the state of Uttar Pradesh where I come from, most of the top athletes are women."
"Women and athleticism were never part of a same sentence by default because the subcontinent has largely been run on patriarchal lines, but the arrival of female role models has made a difference."
India has historically underperformed in international sport, exemplified by a 71st ranking at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Female participation across multiple sports has surged: registered women footballers rose from 8,683 in 2016 to 37,829 last year; junior javelin entrants increased from 31 in 2019 to 137; and female shooters grew from 1,033 to 2,181. Women's share of India's Asian Games medals rose from 36% in 2002 to 43% in 2023. High-profile athletes and teams, including the 2025 cricket World Cup winners and Olympic medallists like P.V. Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu, provide role models fueling further growth.
