Aitana Bonmati, the midfield star and two-time Ballon d'Or recipient, has been hospitalized due to viral meningitis just days before Spain's Women's Euro 2025 opener against Portugal. Despite her recent hospitalization, coach Montse Tome reassured fans that her condition is stable. Bonmati has been pivotal for the Spanish national team, contributing significantly to their victories, including the Women's World Cup in 2023 and the Women's Nations League title. Spain aims to improve its historical performance in the Euro, where they have yet to reach a final.
"The doctors say that it is controlled. Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled," Tome told reporters after the win in Leganes.
"Aitana, for us, is a very important player. We'll wait for her as long as we can," Tome added.
