"Prime Minister Mark Carney sent out warm wishes in social media in both English and French. Good luck to @TempoBasketball on their first, and Canada's first, WNBA game. Go show the world how it's done https://t.co/hoF1yzWiMn—MarkJCarney They honoured great Canadian women's bask"
A sold-out Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto hosted the start of the WNBA’s first season in Canada. The arena, built in 1921 for agriculture fairs, served as a hockey-barn setting for the Toronto Tempo’s inaugural game. Temi Fagbenle and Shakira Austin faced off as the teams took the court under team-coloured lighting and a fired-up crowd of 8,210. Brittney Sykes scored the first-ever Tempo points on a jumper just over the free-throw line. Marina Mabrey’s late free throws gave Toronto a one-point lead, but Shakira Austin’s clutch free throws and late execution issues led to a 68-65 Mystics win. The night included commemorative t-shirts and messages of support from Prime Minister Mark Carney.
