Randy Ullom arrived in California unimpressed by a five-year drought and barren landscapes. Earlier travel to Chile during the 1970s coup exposed him to upheaval and a volcanic disruption that kept him there and sparked interest in wine. He earned a degree in enology and viticulture from Ohio State University and worked five years making wine in upstate New York, where Chardonnay struggled in the cold. In 1981 he joined DeLoach Vineyards in the Russian River Valley, overseeing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and helping expand production and facilities over a twelve-year tenure.
