You're washing gym clothes wrong! NEVER put them straight in machine
"'While you might be tempted to bundle all of your sweaty, smelly clothes straight into the laundry basket after a workout, it's not a good idea,' senior researcher Rebecca Jakeman said. 'Without leaving space for sweat to evaporate, bacteria and smells can linger, creating a horrible cocktail that even the most powerful washing machine might struggle to remove. 'So even if you wear a "clean" outfit back to the gym, you might still find yourself trying to work out what the awful odour is.'"
"'Gym clothes are designed to trap sweat by drawing moisture away from the skin, helping you stay cool and dry,' she explained. 'However, this means that body oils are also drawn into the fabric of your workout clothes. 'That bacteria and sweat will cling onto the fibres for grim life, so anything less than the perfect washing routine means your garments might start to smell when your body warms up.'"
Airing sweaty gym clothes for several hours before washing allows sweat to evaporate and reduces lingering bacteria and odours. Gym garments draw moisture and body oils into fabric, which can trap bacteria that cling to fibres and produce persistent smells when the body warms up. Turning shirts inside out exposes the dirtiest areas directly to water and detergent for better cleaning. Washing similar fabrics together, such as cotton T‑shirts with towels and synthetic leggings with shorts, helps the washing machine clean more effectively and prevents odour transfer between different materials.
