New Microsoft tool eases creation of accessible websites
"Creating a fully keyboard-accessible site, especially one that has complex widgets such as menus, submenus, toolbars, tabs, and other groups of inputs, isn't free; it requires a lot of work and knowledge. Even developers who are adept at using it either had to write a lot of complicated code or had to use a JavaScript library."
"The more code your website needs, the more time it will take for the site to load and become usable. Taking the problem and an early solution to a broad collaborative forum allowed us to mature the focusgroup idea and go through iterations, taking many perspectives into account."
Microsoft has launched a preview of focusgroup technology designed to simplify the development of keyboard-accessible websites with complex navigation elements. Currently, less than half of websites use tabindex, an HTML attribute enabling keyboard navigation through TAB key presses. While Web Content Accessibility Guidelines require such navigation elements, developers find tabindex difficult to implement, often requiring extensive code or JavaScript libraries that increase page load times. Microsoft's focusgroup solution, initially shared in 2022 and refined through collaborative forums, aims to reduce development complexity and code overhead while maintaining accessibility standards for users who rely on keyboard navigation.
