Long fingernails vs. touchscreens: This nail polish could help
""We're doing the hard work of finding things that don't work, and eventually, if you do that long enough, you find something that does.""
"Desai's nail polish touchscreen solution is not ready for commercialization, as a thin layer of the prototype polish doesn't activate the screen consistently."
Desai experimented with 13 commercial clear-coat polishes and over 50 additives to enhance conductivity. She identified ethanolamine and taurine as viable options, each with limitations. Ethanolamine offers conductivity but has toxicity, while taurine is non-toxic but lacks clarity. Combining both yielded promising results, although the prototype polish is not yet commercially viable due to issues with consistency and evaporation. Ongoing research aims to explore more compounds and formulations to improve the product.
