Garmin Fenix 8 Pro announced with LTE and satellite messaging, version with microLED too
Garmin's Fenix 8 Pro includes built-in LTE for independent voice calls, texts, LiveTrack location sharing, and weather forecasts via the Garmin Messenger app, requiring a Garmin subscription bundled with inReach. The watch uses an LTE-M network for low-power cellular operation. Outside cell coverage, inReach satellite service enables two-way messaging and voice, and Google partners with Garmin for satellite SOS. A microLED display option offers up to 4,500 nits of brightness, but is limited to a 51mm model and delivers significantly shorter battery life compared with the OLED versions, which last much longer with AOD enabled.
"The Pro has LTE, allowing it to do voice calls and texts independently of a smartphone. Additionally, the LiveTrack location sharing feature can work over LTE and can deliver weather forecasts - again, all without a phone. Note that this uses the Garmin Messenger app on the watch and requires a subscription through Garmin, not your mobile carrier (this will be a bundle with inReach satellite messaging). Interestingly, the watch uses an LTE-M network, which is designed for low-power operation."
"And when you are outside of cell coverage, Garmin's inReach system kicks in - it has advanced in recent years, allowing you to send not just short text messages, but also two-way voice messages. By the way, Google has partnered with Garmin to provide its satellite SOS feature. Anyway, there is another innovation here - the Garmin Fenix 8 Pro has a version with a microLED display."
"The microLED display boasts up to 4,500 nits of brightness - that's a lot, but OLED-based devices like the Pixel Watch 4 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 can reach 3,000 nits already. And battery life is a disappointment - the microLED version is available only in 51mm form and can last up to 4 days with Always-On Display (AOD) enabled."
