WNBA assembles task force to help combat online hate toward players and teams
Briefly

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced a new task force aimed at combating online hate targeting players and teams. This initiative arises from increasing concerns expressed by players regarding racial, homophobic, and misogynistic comments on social media. The four-pronged strategy includes monitoring social media, enhancing conduct standards, implementing added security at events, and providing mental health support. Player Hailey Van Lith highlighted the league's commitment to player welfare beyond just athletic performance, noting the importance of addressing how players feel as humans in the league.
We want to ensure that the WNBA remains a space where everyone -- players, fans and corporate partners -- feel safe, valued and empowered.
There's no space for hate, and I think there is just continuing drain on all of us, on players, on staff, staff on our teams.
It feels good to going into a league that's not only concerned about the level of play, but also how we're functioning as humans.
