Pelicans fire top executive David Griffin after another lost season
Briefly

The New Orleans Pelicans terminated executive VP David Griffin after a disappointing six seasons, highlighted by a dismal 21-61 record this year. Despite having the top draft pick, Griffin struggled to capitalize on Zion Williamson's potential due to the player's recurring injuries. Over his tenure, the Pelicans missed the playoffs four times and maintained a lackluster 209-263 overall record. Owner Gayle Benson expressed the need for a fresh approach to create a sustainable winning culture, showing appreciation for Griffin’s contributions while emphasizing the desire for future success, including an NBA Championship.
Griffin tallied a 209-263 record and won two playoffs games in his stint, which included this year's 21-61 mark.
"I am committed to hiring the right person to lead our basketball operations department and deliver an NBA Championship to our city," team owner Gayle Benson said.
Williamson's career has been plagued by injury issues and the Pelicans have failed to develop into a consistent contender without their top player.
The Pelicans won 30, 31, 36, 49 and 42 games in Griffin's first five years before bottoming out this season.
