Commanders draft flop just became expendable after Nick Cross steal
"This is the injection of energy and vibrance Washington's defensive back end needed. Cross is a lightning rod player with tons of upside. He is progressing encouragingly in all phases, although his efforts in run support last season were sometimes inconsistent."
"Martin was projected to have a breakout campaign in 2025, the third of his NFL career. He didn't come close to meeting expectations, with woeful tackling, poor coverage, and plummeting confidence playing a leading role behind his demise."
"Cross's arrival speaks volumes, and the Illinois product now has his work cut out to stay in the team's plans."
The Washington Commanders signed safety Nick Cross from the Indianapolis Colts to a two-year, $14 million contract during the legal tampering window. Cross had an excellent 2025 season and represents an immediate upgrade for Washington's defensive backfield under new coordinator Daronte Jones. The signing creates significant uncertainty for third-year safety Quan Martin, who underperformed in 2025 with poor tackling, weak coverage, and diminished confidence. Head coach Dan Quinn reduced Martin's playing time down the stretch despite the team playing for pride. While new coordinator Jones praised Martin during his introductory press conference, the Cross signing indicates the team's true intentions regarding Martin's future with the organization.
