"It's always a good problem to have too many starting pitchers. We'll talk through it as Zack is still building up. Of course, what that looks like in the beginning could be different than what it looks like during the year. We want to be responsible with what he's doing. He was obviously throwing while he was a free agent, but we want to get him under our eyes and make sure we're smart with how much he's throwing - and how long he's going and all those things."
The Washington Nationals have not yet named their Opening Day starter for the March 26 game at Wrigley Field, with manager Blake Butera indicating a decision could come soon. Cade Cavalli is positioned as a likely candidate. The team recently signed Zack Littell, joining new acquisitions Foster Griffin and Miles Mikolas. Combined with existing pitchers Cavalli, Josiah Gray, Jake Irvin, Brad Lord, and Mitchell Parker, the Nationals now have eight starting pitchers for five rotation spots, not counting injured players DJ Herz and Trevor Williams. The team's internal depth chart has moved Lord and Parker to the bullpen, suggesting the fifth rotation spot battle may be between Gray and Irvin. Littell's readiness for Opening Week remains uncertain as the team carefully manages his workload.
