A federal judge has halted deportation proceedings and reinstated work permits for approximately 5,000 Venezuelans under Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This ruling follows a Supreme Court decision allowing deportations during legal debates on TPS policies. Judge Edward E. Chen's ruling mandates that the Department of Homeland Security must uphold TPS rights granted under former Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas's extension. The order emphasizes that the government must honor these rights, including documentation issued within specific dates, affecting those who took appropriate actions during this period.
"If DHS granted that extension, it must honor it and comply with the court's order," stated Emi MacLean, emphasizing the obligation of the Department of Homeland Security.
"What we do know is that two of the named plaintiffs in our case do benefit from the order," said MacLean, clarifying who is affected by the ruling.
