"Mathews, 30, was a pitcher but stalled out in the minors. He pitched in the Angels' system for three years in his early 20s but never made it to the show. He then worked for companies like Push Performance and Driveline Baseball before getting hired by Cincinnati in 2021. He worked various jobs throughout the minors for the Reds before getting bumped to the big league staff in January of 2025."
Simon Mathews, 30, was hired as the Washington Nationals' new pitching coach after serving as an assistant pitching coach with the Cincinnati Reds. Mathews pitched in the Angels' system for three years but never reached the majors, then worked with Push Performance and Driveline Baseball before joining Cincinnati in 2021 and moving to the big league staff in January 2025. The Nationals continue a trend of hiring younger leaders amid a franchise overhaul that followed the firings of Mike Rizzo and Dave Martinez in July. Paul Toboni (35) and Blake Butera (33) are other recent younger hires. Mathews will work with many young pitchers who have yet to fully deliver.
