Miguel Cairo has been appointed as the interim manager of the Washington Nationals after the dismissal of Davey Martinez and Mike Rizzo. At 51 years old, Cairo takes on this role for the second time in recent years, having previously served as the interim manager for the Chicago White Sox. Cairo's experience includes a 17-season MLB career, during which he played for nine different teams. The Washington Nationals currently hold a record of 37-53 and have not had a winning season since their 2019 World Series championship.
Cairo served as Martinez's bench coach over the last two seasons and previously held the same role with the Chicago White Sox, going 18-16 as interim manager there.
Cairo's leadership has been recognized as strong, with interim GM Mike DeBartolo stating that his voice and energy will serve as a catalyst for the team and fan base.
