A Maryland federal judge has ordered the reinstatement of thousands of federal employees who were unlawfully terminated by the Trump administration. After hearing arguments from 20 Democratic attorneys general, he found that agencies failed to follow proper procedures during mass layoffs, known as reductions in force. The judge emphasized that the states were not prepared for the influx of unemployed individuals, impacting their operations. His ruling applies to probationary employees across the nation and issues a 14-day stay to reconsider longer-term relief.
Lacking the notice to which they were entitled, the States weren't ready for the impact of so many unemployed people. They are still scrambling to catch up.
Employees purportedly terminated under the RIFs are returned to the Government's employ, i.e., they resume the status they enjoyed before the Government acted.
