The Nationals are still in rebuild mode, trading away major league talent for prospects. The safest strategy is to remain in this state until a stronger core is established. They have been rebuilding since July 2021, and it may be time to add established players to complement prospects like James Wood and CJ Abrams. Key offseason needs include a better bullpen, as they currently have the worst ERA in baseball, and improvements to the rotation due to disappointing performances from young starters.
Washington's 5.98 bullpen ERA is by far the worst in the sport. The only other teams over 5.00 are the Rockies and Athletics, and they both play in extremely hitter-friendly home parks.
After four-plus years of cutting costs and stockpiling prospects, the Nationals should finally start adding some real pieces to the big-league roster.
