Wizards trade deadline plan is already crystal clear
"The Washington Wizards roster looks completely different heading into next season than it did when the regular season came to an end in April. Part of the team's revamped roster comes courtesy of the young talent added by general manager Will Dawkins this offseason. That doesn't include the interesting addition of veteran guard CJ McCollum, who play a major role in the development of the team's young prospects this season."
"Washington has made it a point of emphasis over the last couple years to land veteran talent to surround their young team with. While the mentorship veterans bring is beneficial, Washington's other motive behind the additions have been the idea of turning the vets into additional assets when their partnership comes to an end. Not to mention, the Wizards have found ways to land additional draft compensation and young talent such as AJ Johnson in deals by taking on unwanted contracts that team's don't want."
The Washington roster underwent significant turnover heading into next season, with general manager Will Dawkins adding young talent and veteran presence. Veteran guard CJ McCollum will play a major role mentoring young prospects. Malcolm Brogdon signed with the New York Knicks, Marcus Smart joined the Los Angeles Lakers, and Richaun Holmes signed a lucrative deal overseas with Panathinaikos. The front office emphasizes surrounding youth with veterans for mentorship while converting those veterans into tradable assets. The Wizards also take on unwanted contracts to acquire draft compensation and young players such as AJ Johnson, preserving cap flexibility and asset accumulation.
