"Tracking down pandas from a 2004 art project. In 2004, artists made 150 panda statues that were scattered across DC as part of PandaMania, a public art project that captured the city's imagination."
"Where did they all go? DC resident Hector Biaggi is trying to track them down, and so far he's found about 60."
"Here are a few. This article appears in the December 2025 issue of Washingtonian."
In 2004, artists created 150 painted panda statues for PandaMania and placed them across Washington, D.C., as a citywide public art project. The statues drew public attention and became part of the city's visual culture. Over the following decades the locations and ownership of many pandas changed or became unknown. DC resident Hector Biaggi is undertaking a project to locate as many pandas as possible and has identified roughly 60 to date. The effort relies on field visits, photographic documentation, and information from current owners, institutions, and the public.
