"We are nearly ready to provide public Waymo rides to everyone in DC,"
"However, despite significant support, District leadership has not yet provided the necessary approvals for us to launch."
"Over the past year, I have observed Waymo vehicles operating throughout our local areas, and I am thrilled about the potential advantages this service could provide, including enhanced accessibility and a decline in traffic-related incidents."
"We'll be ready to serve Washingtonians this year, and urge the Mayor, the District Department of Transportation, and the City Council to act."
Waymo has sought new regulations for more than a year to permit driverless robotaxi operations in Washington, D.C., and can currently test vehicles only with human drivers. City leaders have not yet approved rules to allow driver-free service, so Waymo asked registered D.C. residents to contact Mayor Muriel Bowser, the City Council, and transportation officials to request approvals. The outreach provided a customizable form letter emphasizing accessibility and reduced traffic incidents and limited participation to D.C. residents or those with D.C. addresses. Waymo reported 1,500 residents contacted officials within 90 minutes of the outreach.
