The extra troops will bring the number of National Guard troops in the US capital to more than 2,500."
Two West Virginia National Guard soldiers were shot near the White House and are in critical condition. The shooting occurred at about 2:15 p.m. local time near the Farragut Metro station, less than two blocks from the White House. Police secured the scene and took one suspect into custody. Emergency vehicles and at least one helicopter responded on the National Mall while authorities cordoned off the area. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser described the incident as a targeted attack. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey first reported deaths, then said his office received conflicting information. The Pentagon ordered an additional 500 troops, bringing Guard numbers in Washington to over 2,500.
