Senator Chris Van Hollen faced obstacles when requesting to meet his constituent, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, wrongly deported to El Salvador. Despite his arrival in the country to speak with him at the Terrorism Confinement Center, El Salvador’s government denied the request, claiming prior arrangements were necessary. This refusal followed U.S. Supreme Court directives for Abrego Garcia’s return and intensifying tensions between the Trump administration's policies and allegations of wrongful deportation due to a mistaken identity concerning gang affiliation. Van Hollen highlighted the injustices involved, challenging both U.S. and Salvadoran officials on the situation.
Van Hollen stated, "We have an unjust situation here. The Trump administration is lying about Abrego Garcia, who was wrongly named as a member of MS-13."
The senator expressed frustration with the refusal to allow him to meet or communicate with Abrego Garcia, stating, "I just want to meet with Mr Abrego Garcia."
At a press conference, Van Hollen revealed that Vice-President Ulloa couldn’t guarantee a meeting or phone call with Abrego Garcia, emphasizing the bureaucratic hurdles.
Van Hollen pointed out the systematic failures, noting, "The Trump administration has admitted that an administrative error led to the deportation of Abrego Garcia."
