Memorial Day observances took place at Los Angeles National Cemetery to honor men and women who served the country in war. A wreath was laid at Don Newcombe’s gravesite. Newcombe left baseball in 1952 and 1953 to fight in the Army during the Korean War. The event also recognized his patriotism on and off the field. A Vietnam veteran’s family member emphasized the duty to show honor and respect to veterans and the debt owed to soldiers who gave their lives for freedom.
