"Like a Family Reunion": We Went to DC's Annual Black Nerd Convention - Washingtonian
"I don't feel out of place like this. It's like a family reunion. I love the creativity that's always been here, said Tameka Hendon, who has been attending since 2019. She said her friend handmade her customized cosplay, which features a motorized rotating ballerina in the wig, and was inspired by Queen Charlotte's Swan wig in Bridgerton."
"It's so cool to see so many Black nerds. I know we exist, I know we're out there, and sometimes it can feel really isolating, like you're the only one, so it's really cool to see us all in one spot, said Jaymie Davis, cosplaying Zoey from K Pop Demon Hunters."
"As a kid, we didn't have this space, said Daphne Martin, cosplaying as Speed Racer from the 1960s TV show, highlighting how BlerDCon provides representation and community that previous generations lacked."
BlerDCon is a three-day convention dedicated to Black nerd culture held annually in Washington, DC. The 2024 event at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City attracted over 10,000 attendees and featured panels and appearances from notable figures including actress Zazie Beetz, rapper Redman, animator Carl Jones, and comedian Dulce Soan. The convention offers diverse activities including cosplay competitions, Uno tournaments, and presentations on popular series like The Boondocks. Attendees describe the event as a welcoming family reunion atmosphere where Black nerds feel represented and celebrated, contrasting with feelings of isolation they experience elsewhere in nerd spaces.
