Judge rules Trump name must be removed from Kennedy Center
A US District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center’s organic statute requires the venue to remain named for President Kennedy and bars any other formal name or public memorial based on the board’s unilateral action. Cooper held that only Congress can change the name and criticized the board’s vote to close the facility as ill-informed and seemingly preordained, with no regard for legal obligations. The Trump administration had planned to close the center for renovations and add Trump’s name. Trump then canceled the renovation proposal and returned control to Congress, while defending the closure as preventing neglect, decay, and poor maintenance. Trump installed a handpicked board after the 2024 election, made himself chairman, and added his name to the building facade.
"The Kennedy Center's organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board's unilateral say-so,"
"Cooper also ruled that the Kennedy Center board's vote to close the facility was "ill-informed and seemingly preordained" with no regard for its legal obligations."
