John Carlson admits he and Capitals have not had extension talks heading into final year of contract: 'I've always been pretty good at focusing on what I can control'

John Carlson, age 35, begins the 2025-26 NHL season in the final year of an eight-year deal signed in 2018 and became extension-eligible on July 1. Carlson and the team have not broached an extension, and Carlson says he is not worrying about long-term security right now. He emphasizes focusing on controllable tasks and preparation rather than reflecting on tenure. Carlson served as an alternate captain for six seasons, led Capitals defensemen with 51 points in 79 games in 2024-25, posted strong five-on-five metrics, logged 23:34 average ice time, and is the franchise leader in games, goals, assists, and points.
