"On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021. Their heroism will never be forgotten."
"We owe them eternal gratitude, and this nation is stronger because of them. The officers were overwhelmed by thousands of President Donald Trump's supporters and eventually pushed them out of the building."
"The mob of rioters who violently forced their way past police and broke in were echoing Trump's false claims of a stolen election after the Republican was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden. The crowd stopped the congressional certification of Biden's victory for several hours."
A plaque commemorating the officers who defended the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021 attack has been installed near the West Front where the most severe fighting occurred. The plaque was placed on the Senate side after that chamber voted unanimously to install it, following delays by House Speaker Mike Johnson. The inscription honors the officers' bravery in protecting democracy. Senator Thom Tillis led the recent installation effort while commemorating the attack's anniversary. More than 140 officers from various agencies were injured during the siege when Trump supporters stormed the building following false claims of election fraud. The violent mob temporarily halted congressional certification of Biden's victory before police regained control.
