James Roscoe, deputy to Britain’s ambassador in Washington, abruptly left his post. Foreign Office officials did not provide an explanation for his departure. Until he left, he served as second-in-command at the British Embassy in Washington and had previously stood in for Lord Peter Mandelson after Mandelson was sacked. Roscoe was considered a potential successor for the role that ultimately went to Sir Christian Turner. He played key roles in President Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK and in King Charles III’s visit to the US. The British Embassy declined further comment, and Roscoe could not be reached. Previously, he was UK ambassador to the United Nations, communications chief to Queen Elizabeth II, and chief press officer in Downing Street for Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, with earlier postings including the UN, Sierra Leone, and Iraq.
"He had also been chief press officer in Downing Street for prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Roscoe's earlier diplomatic postings included the UN, Sierra Leone and Iraq."
