"A lot of Washingtonians have experienced challenges over the past few months. In an effort to spread some community love around town, we've compiled a list of events and volunteer opportunities to help you pay it forward. Cupid's Undie Run The one-of-a-kind annual Cupid's Undie Run takes over the Wharf this weekend. Dress in your Valentine's-themed undergarments and jog or dance at Union Stage for a good cause; event proceeds help support people affected by neurofibromatosis ($45+)."
"CCAN's Polar Bear Plunge Don't worry: this year's Polar Bear Plunge is not plunging into the Potomac, due to the recent contamination from sewage. Instead, there will be a series of "winter water games" on the banks of the river at National Harbor. It's all for a good cause-to raise funds for Chesapeake Climate Action (donations welcome)."
"Love Is Trash clean-up Find your love match over community service at the Love Is Trash clean-up at Meridian Hill Park. Local service organizations District Cleanups and DC Surfrider team up to bring together volunteers who share a passion for protecting the environment (free). Invasive Plant Removal In an effort to protect the ecosystem and wildlife habitats at Alexandria's Four Mile Run Park, volunteers can assist in removing invasive plants such as English ivy, porcelain berry, and cutleaf teasel. It's recommended that participants bring a water bottle and dress in clothing that can get dirty (free)."
Multiple community events and volunteer opportunities across the Washington area provide ways to help neighbors and local causes. Events include themed fundraisers like a Cupid's Undie Run and a Polar Bear Plunge-style winter water games to raise money for medical research and climate action. Local clean-ups and invasive plant removal projects focus on protecting parks, ecosystems, and wildlife habitats. Dance fundraisers and themed parties support youth services and women's shelters. Some events charge modest fees while many volunteer activities are free. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately and bring water for outdoor work.
