Spencer Carbery expresses confidence in assistant coach Kirk Muller as Capitals power play falls to second-last in NHL
"I think two things are really, really important. One is that, at this point in the season, if we just completely (start over), now all of a sudden in the most significant games of the year, you could be trying something that you haven't used all year long, which is, it's tough."
"It's not about what's going on in the past. It's not about our percentage. It's not about how it looked. We need to approach the power play with a one-game mindset."
The Washington Capitals face significant power play struggles this season, ranking second-last in the NHL with a 15.5 conversion rate, approaching their worst performance since 2005-06. The team has struggled since losing key players Nicklas Backstrom, TJ Oshie, and Evgeny Kuznetsov, averaging 20.1% success since 2022-23. Alex Ovechkin, the all-time power-play goals record holder, has scored only four power-play goals this season. The Capitals have gone 10 consecutive power-play opportunities without scoring since the Olympic break and have allowed eight shorthanded goals against, tied for third-most in the league. Head coach Spencer Carbery opposes a complete overhaul late in the season, preferring a one-game mindset approach instead.
