The Capitals started the game competitively but trailed after a gaffe by Logan Thompson. The second period showed little energy and the Capitals' power play was ineffective and listless. The national broadcast featured mistaken commentary and player misidentification. Brett Leason returned to a Capitals sweater after three seasons away with the Anaheim Ducks, dating back to the Peter Laviolette/Ilya Samsonov era.
