Capitals @ Sharks Recap: Leonard Leads Caps to 7-1 Win In San Jose
"Plus: There are plenty of good things to write about from tonight's game, but the quick start from Washington was the biggest piece of the puzzle for sure. Their four-goal first period would have been a stellar way to start any game, but it was extra important on the second half of a back-to-back. The offensive production didn't stop after the first period either, and a total of 10 skaters plus Charlie Lindgren recorded at least one point."
"Capitals Player of the Game: Ryan Leonard, welcome to the NHL. He recorded four points in what was easily the best game of his young career. With two goals and two assists, he was the most productive Washington skater on the ice. His second goal was particularly stunning: Per NHL PR, Leonard is the first Caps rookie to record a four-point game since Nicklas Backstrom in 2008. It's fine, we're fine, there's just a LOT of dust in our eyes."
The Capitals entered the game shorthanded and on the second half of a back-to-back, with travel and a poor history in the building. Washington scored four goals in the first period, added two in the second, and one in the third for a 7-1 final score. Ten skaters plus goalie Charlie Lindgren recorded at least one point. Lindgren carried a shutout into the third period before Dmitry Orlov scored with 7:02 remaining; a goaltender interference challenge failed. Ryan Leonard recorded two goals and two assists, becoming the first Capitals rookie with a four-point game since Nicklas Backstrom in 2008.
