Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters focused on protection for quarterback Jayden Daniels by selecting Oregon's Josh Conerly, Jr. at No. 29 in the NFL Draft. Conerly, an athletic 6-foot-5, 311-pound left tackle, is anticipated to contribute immediately, potentially competing for a starting position at right tackle. Peters praised Conerly's youth and athleticism while indicating the team's commitment to bolster the offensive line. Although there were trade offers, the team prioritized Conerly as their top prospect amidst a thin tackle class.
"Every move we make, we're trying to maximize [Daniels]," Peters said.
Conerly said the team hadn't discussed his role in the NFL and that he was open to playing any position. "Whatever's asked, that's what I'm doing," he said.
Peters praised Conerly's youth - he doesn't turn 22 until November - and athleticism. Conerly had excellent testing numbers at the scouting combine..."
Peters had multiple offers to trade down, but he declined because Conerly was clearly their top remaining prospect.
