In the Season 2 finale of HBO's The Last of Us, the show's creators chose not to include a significant death from the original game: the dog Alice. Showrunner Craig Mazin explained that he felt enough emotional impact had been achieved without the need for Alice's death, which would have added to the already graphic violence shown in the episode. The decision reflects Hollywood's tendency to shy away from killing animals on-screen, as well as a narrative consideration regarding the number of deaths portrayed during the finale.
"I think you get like one dog murdering episode a lifetime. There are two cardinal rules in Hollywood: One, don't spend your own money; Two, don't kill a dog."
"Killing Alice the dog would be probably one too many deaths for the Season 2 finale. In the episode, Ellie kills Owen... Mel, who was pregnant, tries to convince Ellie to cut out her unborn child from her stomach."
