Steam Review Scores Are Changing Amid Endless Review-Bombing
Briefly

Valve is updating how Steam displays user reviews by excluding reviews in languages other than English from the percentage ratings. This change aims to address inconsistencies in user experiences due to translation issues and cultural differences, particularly in the context of Steam's global audience. Language-specific review scores will be calculated for games with over 2,000 total reviews and 200 reviews in a specific language. Users can view breakdowns of scores across languages while retaining the option to revert to the previous review system.
Steam's growth since then into an even larger global presence means customers in different regions of the world may have vastly different experiences from each other for the same game.
Calculating a language-specific review score means that we can better distill the sentiment of these different groups of customers, and in doing so, better serve potential customers that belong to those groups.
We realize that whenever we make changes to User Reviews, we're inviting some scrutiny into our motivations for making those changes.
Maintaining trust in the system is crucial to us, so we've erred on the side of being transparent with our goals.
