Redfall Boss Reflects On Game's Struggles And Studio Closure
"Every company makes the decisions they make for the reasons they make them."
"It was a shock at first, but who I really felt for were the people who were new, this was their first project or they'd only been in the industry for a while."
"If we had launched with that and then built from there it might have been a different story."
"Ultimately, Redfall is a game that should not have been released yet."
Arkane Austin developed the vampire shooter Redfall under Harvey Smith's leadership. Redfall launched in May 2023 and failed to find a sustainable audience. Microsoft closed Arkane Austin about a year after launch and discontinued most support for the game. A post-closure 1.4 update introduced substantial improvements that might have changed the game's reception if present at launch. The closure surprised many given Arkane's wider track record of well-received titles, and concerns focus on newer staff whose careers were affected. Arkane Lyon continues development on a Marvel Blade project but public news has been sparse.
