The DLC grants Raichu two Mega forms, satisfying fan interest while simultaneously closing the door on a longstanding fan hope. Gorochu was originally conceived as a third evolution for Pikachu, designed alongside Pikachu and Raichu by Atsuko Nishida with fangs, horns, and an appearance described as "a god of thunder." Ken Sugimori saw nothing wrong with the design, but Koji Nishino said Gorochu was cut for balance and cartridge space. A leaked 2020 source code included a back sprite that many fans treat as the only official remnant of Gorochu.
