"The Legend of California features an open world that takes place on a mythical landmass inspired by the game's namesake, only it's the 19th century and players will be working together in groups or going solo off into the wilderness to gather resources and build up your ranch with stables, mines, and other structures."
"An online survival crafting sim with hyper-realistic graphics set during a previous historical era isn't what most fans might have expected Kaplan, who worked on fantasy and sci-fi games at Blizzard, to create. He explained that Kintsugiyama has 34 developers, including fellow Blizzard veteran Tim Ford, and wants to define its own game style rather than borrow from the past."
"The way Kaplan described it on a recent episode of the Lex Fridman podcast, each server will host a different configuration of the world map. Different regions will have different difficulty tiers, and points of interest will move around the world as you play. The music and lighting play big roles in defining the feel of the game."
Jeff Kaplan, the veteran game designer behind World of Warcraft and Overwatch, has launched Kintsugiyama studio with his debut game The Legend of California, published by Dreamhaven. The game is a multiplayer action-survival FPS set on a mythical island inspired by California during the gold rush. Players gather resources, build ranches with structures like stables and mines, and explore an open world either solo or in groups. Each server features different world configurations with varying difficulty regions and moving points of interest. The aesthetic draws inspiration from Albert Bierstadt paintings, emphasizing music and lighting. Kaplan intentionally diverged from his Blizzard legacy, stating he doesn't want to create a pseudo-Blizzard game. The 34-person team includes fellow Blizzard veteran Tim Ford. A public alpha is planned for this month with eventual Early Access release.
