"Despite the passion and hard work of our team, we have not been able to build a sustainable player base to support the game long term. Despite a splashy reveal at The Game Awards in December, things had not been looking good for Highguard, the first release from Wildlight, a studio founded by former developers on series like Apex Legends, Call of Duty, and Titanfall."
"It's an abrupt end for Highguard, but that short runway for live-service games is becoming increasingly common. Wildlight laid off most of its staff in February, and a week later the Highguard website went down, prompting concerns that the game might be over."
Highguard, a free-to-play squad shooter developed by Wildlight Entertainment, is closing permanently on March 12th, approximately six weeks after its January 26th launch. Despite attracting 2 million players and receiving a prominent reveal at The Game Awards in December, the game failed to build a sustainable long-term player base. Wildlight Entertainment, founded by former developers from Apex Legends, Call of Duty, and Titanfall and partially funded by Tencent, laid off most staff in February. Before shutdown, the game receives a final update featuring a new character and weapon. This closure reflects an increasingly common pattern of live-service games failing shortly after launch.
