Dan Houser co-founded Rockstar Games and served as lead writer on major titles including Grand Theft Auto III and both Red Dead Redemption games. He took an extended break in 2019 that ended with his departure after decades of continuous production work. After briefly exploring film and television, he concluded that games offered greater creative ambition and opportunity. He moved to Santa Monica and founded Absurd Ventures, hiring Greg Borrud as head of games and Wendy Smith as COO. Absurd Ventures intends to operate beyond traditional game development. In 2024 the company released a 12‑part story podcast.
