GTA Dev Wanted Online Mode As Far Back As 2001
Briefly

GTA Online, the enduring multiplayer mode for GTA 5, has kept the game highly profitable for Rockstar over ten years. Obbe Vermeij, a developer involved in earlier GTA titles, revealed that Rockstar had aspirations for an online mode dating back to GTA 3, but time constraints led to its cuts. Further attempts for Vice City failed for similar reasons, and no efforts were made for San Andreas. GTA 4 introduced a multiplayer feature, while GTA Online further revolutionized the experience. Future iterations, like GTA 6, are expected to include online capabilities, although the future of GTA Online remains unclear.
Obbe Vermeij, who worked on the GTA series, revealed that Rockstar sought to include online multiplayer in GTA since the early days of GTA 3, although it was ultimately cut due to time constraints.
Attempts to create an online mode for Vice City were also abandoned due to development deadlines; with San Andreas, Rockstar decided it wasn't worth pursuing.
GTA 4 marked the beginning of multiplayer features, while GTA Online from GTA 5 significantly expanded the multiplayer experience, maintaining the game's popularity for over a decade.
Future plans for GTA 6 suggest it will have an online component, though the fate of GTA Online post-launch remains uncertain, despite hints at continued support.
