Games run faster on SteamOS than Windows 11, Ars testing finds
Briefly

The article examines frame rate performance of SteamOS versus Windows across five games. SteamOS performed significantly better in four of those games, with only Borderlands 3 displaying comparable rates. For instance, in Returnal, using SteamOS increased the average frame rate from 18 FPS to 33 FPS. Even updated Asus drivers improved Windows performance, but benchmarks still lagged behind SteamOS by up to 36 percent. Despite utilizing a Proton translation layer, Valve's work on Mesa graphics drivers has made SteamOS notably more efficient, minimizing the overhead that Windows users face, a point Microsoft is now addressing for gamers.
SteamOS showed noticeable frame rate improvements in four of the five games tested, while Windows sometimes performed worse with stock Lenovo drivers.
When playing Returnal at 'High' graphics with SteamOS, the difference was a 33 FPS average compared to only 18 FPS with Windows drivers.
Sideloading updated Asus drivers improved Windows performance but still fell short compared to SteamOS by 8 percent to 36 percent in frame rates.
Valve's ongoing updates to Proton and Mesa graphics drivers have enhanced performance on SteamOS, optimizing it beyond initial expectations despite going through a translation layer.
