Death Stranding 2: On The Beach inherits the distinctive gameplay of its predecessor but grapples with unoriginal story elements and insufficient tension. Players once again navigate a world filled with strategic deliveries, albeit with fewer surprises and more familiarity. The narrative unfolds as Sam Porter Bridges reconnects a post-apocalyptic landscape while accompanied by Lou and new allies aboard the DHV Magellan. Despite the engaging core mechanics, the sequel's reliance on earlier story beats and a sluggish pacing may leave players yearning for more spontaneity and excitement.
Throughout the 33 hours it took me to reach the end credits, which included a few side activities along the way, the story focused on the effects of connecting the United States to the Chiral Network.
But this second iteration doesn't feel as arresting as it mired in familiar story beats, a disappointing lack of friction, and an obsession with doubling down on the weaker aspects of Death Stranding.
