Joint CEO Michal Nowakowski said Cyberpunk 2077's strong sales are a testament to the "franchise's enduring power." The sales success also "enables us to be even more audacious about charting its future," he said. VGC reminded us that The Witcher 3 needed about six years to achieve 30 million in sales, so Cyberpunk 2077 is selling at a faster rate."
"Cyberpunk 2077's launch in December 2020 was so problematic that the game was removed from sale on the PlayStation Store due its bugs and issues, and CD Projekt processed thousands of refunds. However, despite the issues, the RPG sold more than 13 million units out of the gate to become one of the fastest-selling RPGs in history. Executives at the developer benefitted, too, with the top bosses earning millions in bonuses."
Cyberpunk 2077 experienced a disastrous December 2020 launch with severe bugs prompting removal from the PlayStation Store and thousands of refunds. The game nevertheless sold over 13 million units initially, becoming one of the fastest-selling RPGs. CD Projekt committed to updates and delivered major improvements culminating in the Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 release in 2023 and a June launch on the Switch 2. Phantom Liberty has sold more than 10 million units, and overall Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 35 million copies. A sequel, Cyberpunk 2, is in development with expanding teams in Boston, Warsaw, and Vancouver.
