Bungie is investigating the unauthorized use of Scottish artist Fern Hook's artwork in the closed alpha of its PvPvE shooter, Marathon. Hook highlighted that her designs from 2017 appeared in the game without consent, leading her to suspect potential copyright issues upon the game's announcement. Bungie acknowledged the situation, stating a former employee was responsible and assured it would rectify the matter with Hook. This incident follows a previous case involving artist Tofu Rabbit's work used for a Destiny 2 Nerf Gun. Bungie is now reviewing its in-game assets to prevent future occurrences.
"Its environments are covered with assets lifted from poster designs I made in 2017," Hook wrote on X.
Bungie says that it was made aware of the issue and determined the art team did not know the artwork was stolen and that a former employee was responsible for adding the assets.
This is not the first time an artist's work has been used for a Bungie product without their permission.
Bungie says it's reviewing its in-game assets especially those done by former employees to ensure this won't happen again (or again, or again).
